This morning’s sunrise over the otter pond at the sawmill.
This morning, sunrise was quite a treat for the eyes. Even in the middle of a large industrial site you can find a moment to enjoy nature.

Looking east over the mill site toward Lassen Peak.

A red tail hawk perches on a log deck while on a morning hunt.

The big log deck forms a wall of wood.

A great blue heron gets in a bit of morning fishing.
Marvellous photos, particularly the first one.

The Red Tailed Hawk is a really good one. A bit of back light makes the pic a stand out. Sunrises are great too.

Beautiful photos! I especially like the one of the hawk, the sunlight on his feathers seems to make him glow!

What a gorgeous sunrise! And great photos of the wildlife, too. It must really be beautiful in your neck of the woods!

It really is, but this year it’s so dry. everything is so brown instead of green. Almost like we skipped winter.

Oh that’s too bad. I wish it felt like we skipped winter in Nashville but it’s still here. That dang groundhog!

Send him out here. I liked his prediction. All we have is a lousy ground squirrel out here and I’m thinking of naming him Friskies and putting the cat in charge of him!

Oooh, Friskies is a fabulous name. He’s on his way!

I love the photo of the log deck, I can almost smell the wood!

It is pretty impressive in person. I have to admit that the smell of an irrigated log deck isn’t as nice as the fresh cut wood.

Oh well, perhaps I’m a hopeless wood romantic, I assume that wood always has that fresh smell. Probably good that I just “almost” could smell it then ;-).

It is much better to imagine, because logs that have been watered for months usually smell like an old swamp.

Red in the morning and no rain? Bummer. Illinois had plenty of snow we can truck down! Ha! Great pix!

Thanks Ilex, and yes please send truck loads of snow! Railcars full of it if you have to. 😉

Now that sounds like a heck of a sawmill…I’ve only seen a small one..

It is a pretty big mill. It cuts about 100 million board feet of timber per year.

These logs will be cut into lumber. The water preserves them in good condition until they are ready to be sawn. When they are watered they don’t split, stain or rot. We usually don’t log much in the winter, so we store up enough logs that the mill runs non-stop all year long.
