California Valley Quail on sentry duty. Pen and Ink.
It’s tough being a prey item. California valley quail deal with this fact of life by having a sentry to watch over the covey. He’s not much for defending the covey, but will sound a pretty good alarm.
Wonderful drawing!

Thank you GP! I hope you’re not disappointed. It was a few decades ago that I painted it. The new book will be even better.

I received the package and it is just as I expected, not a signed copy, but in very good shape. Someone name Cathy Zorph put her name in it.

I don’t recognize the name. You’ll see a big difference between this book and the new one. We would be happy to sign it if you want.

Probably the mother who bought it, just thought I’d mention it.

Gorgeous!!! Do you go right in with pen, or do an underdrawing first? Amazing detail!

Thank you Laura! I always start with a pencil sketch underneath. Mostly, it’s just to capture the basic shapes correctly with no detail. I do the detail work all in pen. Except when I’m trying to understand the shading or difficult detail. Then I’ll draw it out to avoid mistakes.

That is very good and exactly what I needed to hear right now. I’m going to adopt a pencil framework too. Thank you very much!

Beautifully done…reminds me of the Gambel Quail (as seen in Arizona) 🙂

Thank you Theanne! They are quite similar birds. We have gambels here in the northeast part of the state. I might have to give them a try sometime.

Amazing drawing, great detail. Quail aren’t exactly high on the food chain but they sure are fun to watch.

Thank you Susan! They cruise through our yard just about everyday, like a bunch of tiny chickens. I always enjoy them too.

Yes, our valley quail are quite fancy! They’re red carpet ready, after all they’re the California State Bird.

Sentry duty is a necessity and an honor I would think. Looking fashionably sharp too! Thanks for sharing nature’s way so beautifully.

The California valley quail are the California State bird. California is the land of Hollywood after all. They have to be red carpet ready all the time!

I’m happy to hear from the new forest in the south of England. I couldn’t agree with you more Rebecca about a life in the forests. From the forest of northern California.
