I once caught one and hid it in my boss’s bedroom cabinet at our forest headquarters. It was supposed to run out and startle him, but instead it cowered in the back. No worries, we safely set it free after it’s ordeal. That was many years ago.
I think I may have posted a pic in my old blog or on FB about our squirrel cacciatore meal. 🙂 We’d not hunted squirrels in a while…too much work for a little bit of meat, even though it’s tasty meat. On the other hand, it’s easier to deal with than a deer… 😀
I’m impressed, squirrel cacciatore sounds delicious. It may be easier than deer, but you get a few more meals out of a deer. In fact we had venison tacos for dinner.
Mmmm! We miss venison. We had so many deer this year that hubby kept saying he was going to get one and then we decided we were both too lazy to gut and butcher it (we have a bone saw and want to do our own butchering), so he tried on the second day of the season (missed) and didn’t go for it again.
We do all of our butchering. We skin them asap. Then we de-bone and remove the fat. This makes the flavor mild and not at all gamey. However, if you prefer not to butcher, then take it to a professional butcher.
We had taken them to local butchers before, but we really prefer to do our own. We’re pretty proficient with chickens but it’s always daunting to butcher something the first time. 🙂
Plus, I didn’t mention it before but I have a frozen shoulder and it’s killing me so that makes me feel even less inclined to tackle a deer right now. LOL!
Oh, goodness! I don’t plan to leave it for years. LOL! As soon as the weather gets better and hubby doesn’t need our one 4WD vehicle to get to work, I’ll make an appointment with a doctor. I don’t want surgery!
We used to let hubby’s colleagues hunt on our property and in return, they will get an extra one for us, so we’ve had plenty of venison before…and surprisingly, I have never had a gamey-tasting deer!
Well, you’re really making me want to get one now…but we’ll have to wait until November, I think. 🙂
I hope you do. I don’t anything makes me feel more connected to nature than hunting. I’m no longer an observer , but a participant. Besides, like gardening, hunting creates a much greater appreciation for our food. And it’s something that Mary and I do together.
We consider it all part of self-sufficiency. Like you said, it gives you a greater appreciation for your food! I feel that if a person eats meat, he/she should, at least once in their lives, butcher their own animal to see what it is that they are consuming…not some sanitary, plastic-wrapped blob from the grocery store. 🙂

I was so much less lazy in my 40s…LOL!

I get that. A friend got his frozen shoulder operated on after ignoring it for years. He’s doing great now. Had no idea how bad it was affecting him.
