They are very common here. We even have a wild patch in our front yard that we encouraged to spread. Although, I think they are a different variety of wyethia.
Tim,
I’ve always loved picking flowers. I know that’s a no-no in the wild, but I’m wondering if these are available for the home gardener. Would you happen to know?
I enjoyed your humor about the woolly mammoth’s preference for this plant. You’re so fun! Keep these great photos coming.
Don’t tell, but I pick wildflowers for Mary when I get the chance! 😉 I doubt that this specific variety is available, but I bet there are other varieties of wyethia that are. And I bet Ilex of http://midwesternplants.org/ would know which ones.
Sorry. I would never want to mess up a 5 million dollar grant. But I would like to see a woolly mammoth. Let me know when you find one. They might reconsider your grant.
You may have something there! Now, where to find a woolly mammoth? Hmmm….they are pretty big, so it shouldn’t be too hard. I’ll have to get back to you on that.
These are kind of ancient looking aren’t they? I love those centres, flowers within flowers!

What a vibrant yellow. Is it a very tall plant? I’m not sure your woolly mammoth would be able to forage something teeny. LOL

Really! You’ve debunked my woolly mammoth theory. Now I’ll never get a 5 million dollar grant to study it. Thanks a lot Ruth… 😦
By the way, they’re about 18″ tall.
