This weekend we had the good fortune to attend the 66th Annual Lumberjack Fiesta. It was pure Americana like a Norman Rockwell painting. The Fiesta takes place at Hoo Hoo Park in McCloud, California. I posted a few iphone photos when we were at the event. Those pictures didn’t really tell the whole story. Let me show you around.

Great form at the axe throw.

Hoo Hoo Park in McCloud.

The Lil Lumberjack competition. This boy lets one fly!

Nice throw young man!

Mt Shasta provides the perfect backdrop. The softball tournament went all weekend.

There was even a horseshoe tournament.

We were signing books for Red Tail Publishing.
This was the Red Tail Publishing gang on Saturday. Mary Livingston, The Backdoor Artist, Tim Livingston (me) and Ivy Smith, were there signing books. Phil all around good guy helps us out a bunch!

Mary visits with a guest who admires a cuddly turkey vulture toy.

Venders were there with food, art, clothes and all kinds of interesting stuff.

What picnic would be complete without a watermelon eating contest! The big boys had to sit on their hands.

- The aftermath!

Blitz and Teka came too. There were lots of dogs in attendance.

Blitz gets a “little” love.

The ladies axe throw. The timber sports events were for anyone who wanted to participate.

Spectators enjoy the men’s double buck competition.

What better souvenir then a chainsaw carved bear!

The men’s double buck competition. These guys are cutting like “a house afire!”

TIME!
A special thank you to Linda Martin Andersen for having me as her guest blogger last week on A Writer’s Playground. Go check out her awesome site!

Tim,
Thanks for sending readers over to “A Writer’s Playground” to see your blog post about timber sports. I enjoyed having you as a guest.
I love your photo coverage of the lumberjack events. Festivals are a wonderful way to show that history is lively.

Looks like all kinds of fun, Tim! The day looked gorgeous – and the view of Mt. Shasta is beautiful. Cute dogs (don’t tell Teddy I said that).

I would never tell on you to Teddy. We has lots of fun. So did many other as lots of adult beverages were consumed, but not by us.

Probably smart to stay out of the adult beverages if you were signing books…! Thanks for having my back with Ted. He can be such a little terror!

Although, we camped next to a softball team tent village. They kept the party going until 3am. I woke up at 1:45am when the mobile boom box showed up. The vibrations were more intense than a stadium sound system. I thought Mt Shasta was starting an eruption. Eventually the local friendly deputy showed and encouraged the villagers to go to bed. In the morning it looked like a tornado hit their stash of adult beverages and scattered them everywhere, all while suctioning out all the liquids. Hey… Where were you last Saturday night?

It kinda sounds like a CBXB tornado whirled through your campsite….hee hee! Although, if I’d have been there, Mt. Shasta would definitely have erupted due to my annoyingly loud laughter (which I can never seem to help!). Thank God for the local deputy!

Curiosity question–for the double buck competition, do the participants get to choose where on the log they will cut (i.e., avoid knots…) or does everyone just take their chances? Or doesn’t it matter?
LikeLike
They always attach a clear piece of the log to cut. That way all competitors do not have to cut through knots. The knotty sections are definitely harder wood.

Looks like loads of fun in great weather. But Monty Python wants to know if you’re a lumberjack and if you’re okay.

I wouldn’t have guessed there’s a place called Hoo Hoo Park. That sent me searching, and at
http://allthingsshasta.com/wordpress/?p=606
I found this: “The Hoo-Hoo’s are a fraternal organization for those working in the forest products industry. Their official name is the International Concatenated Order of Hoo-Hoo, Incorporated. The name of the organization is based upon the story ‘The Hunting of the Snark’ by Lewis Carroll.”
Hoo knew?
