Wild Wednesday … Birds Around the Mill

I started this post last June, but never finished it. Better late that never. Here are just a few pictures of our birds that make their home at the Mill. It defies conventional wisdom that so much wildlife makes it home at an industrial complex and thrives. It’s all about the habitat.

  1. We have several of the same birds here in the Midwest. I find the kildeer to be among the oddest of them. Talk about living life on the edge–laying your eggs on the bare ground in the middle of a horse paddock and then trying to keep the horses away from them by engaging in the “I’m wounded and dragging my wing–try to catch me instead of stepping on my eggs” tactic. They make me laugh every time.

    • They live around our ponds and the dogs love to chase them. This spring they nested on a chunk of concrete about 60’ from our deck. Luckily we spotted them before the dogs did. We put a dog fence around them and managed to protect them until they hatched. At the Mill they’re always running around playing broken wing with our Cat 950 loaders. Crazy birds.

  2. Great pictures. Birds are my favorite creatures. I currently have 2 pair of Mandarins, along with one drake and two Wood Duck hens. The Wood ducks are: Teak, Holly and Rose. The Mandarins are Jack, Jackie, Junior and Joy. Spending time with them daily keeps my sanity. They are so much fun to watch as they fly, dabble, preen and fuss with each other. They are bonded with me and look forward to the “treats of the day.” However, no one else can come around without their complete disapproval.

  3. Some lovely photos here! I love the Black Phoebe in particular. Thanks for sharing! I have a poetry blog here on WordPress and today’s poem features a blackbird in case you have time to look? Have a relaxing weekend, Sam 🙂
