Spring wildflower season has begun with a vengeance in the Northern California foothills. Here are a few or the early risers.
Western Wallflower
The blue dicks are popping up. These are near our front gate. It’s a sign that the pipevine swallowtails will soon be out.
Popcorn flower?
Popcorn flower and blue dicks.
Pipevine
Redbud
Wild raddish
Shooting stars
Buttercups
Dew on the grass. I know it’s not a flower.
Starflower?
That’s not a flower either, but it is wild.
Don’t worry if you’ve in the frozen north, spring’s coming!

We are, but it has been raining a lot and we need all the rain we can get due to the drought. This week it is supposed to reach the 70s. The grass will grow 6 inches!

I love the pipevine flower, because soon after the plants leaf out, the pipevine butterflies appear. They are our most common local butterfly. They are a beautiful black butterfly that feeds on the blue dicks and lay their eggs on the pipevine plant. The caterpillars are black with little orange spikes. They are the essence of home to me.

I grow Dutchman’s Pipe, which I think is tropical and it does attract butterflies. Unfortunately, the butterflies have not been around for a few years. Hopefully the end of our drought will bring them back.

Thank you Susan! I really like the shot of the dew too. That’s why I had to include it. The grass has grown 6″ since I took that picture.

I love the pipevine wildflowers. This is the host plant of the pipevine swallowtail, our most common local butterfly. Its a beautiful black butterfly that always makes me feel like I’m home.

Beautiful flowers. Not much here yet, except my daffodils. There is a hint of budding on the trees, but I am hoping that not much comes out yet because if they are too far out, sometimes a normal frost can damage them. I almost lost my lovely Japanese maple that way and it has finally recovered. I love spring, but I get concerned when it gets too warm too early.

It’s hard to keep up with everything here. More and more flowers keep blooming and the trees are all starting to leaf out. Our daffodils are long gone now.
