What! Didn’t you hear it’s Squirrel Appreciation Day, January 21st. Our blogger friend Linda Martin Anderson alerted me to this important day in her blog at A Writer’s Playground. Check it out. A kid friendly blog with every special day of the month to discover.

Giving the look!

While winding down a steep mountain road two hunting seasons ago, this little scamp was gathering nuts. I surprised him and he ran up a large black oak tree. Just a short way up the tree he turned and gave me “the look.” He was sure I was coveting his nuts! Then he berated me as best he could with an acorn in his mouth. So I shot him. Sorry, I meant to say, I shot his picture with my Nikon. You can see it here, Forestry Friday … It’s The Time Of The Season For Squirrels.

  And I bet you can hear their little footsteps. I had an Uncle the lived in North Hollywood many years ago. When we visited, we would watch the gray squirrels using the power lines to get around. Being a kid from the country I had never seen that before.

Great drawing! He’s pretty feisty looking too even in his photo (you scared me when you said you “shot” him!). Where we live there are millions of squirrels, black, gray and red. I like them but my dog is another story! They all make a fast retreat up the trees when we come out!

    Okay, so here is the deal – we have many oak trees in our yard and all the lovely squirrels can’t seem to get enough of the acorns. We probably get 1,000’s of the nuts each year – so the best I can do is go out and rake them up and put them in the middle of the yard this way the squirrels won’t have too far to travel, lol!

Why is there an appreciation day for them?? Are they endangered? Or is it just because you are generally happy to have them around 🙂 I wish we would do that for our sparrows – they are almost gone thanks to mobiles it is said.

    Well, the common Indian sparrow was very common all over the plains of our country a few years ago. Now there are actually wildlife groups asking people to plot any if they can see them. These beautiful tiny birds have almost completely disappeared. According to our scientists, it has something to do with ‘radiation’ from mobile towers – much the same way it has affected the bee population. Its a little scary when you think that if mobile towers may be responsible for almost wiping out two abundant species then what could they be doing to us?!?

        I doubt it. Money trumps conservation every time 😦 And I am sure the effect on bees is universal. It is supposed to jumble their signals, so they can’t find their way home 😦 Lol, not very happy topics for a morning devoid of chirping sparrows. Lets hope it does pan out in the end. 🙂

        Indeed! I know there are issues with bees in the US. It is a big concern here because of the effect to agriculture. I have heard different theories including viruses, but not mobile towers. I’ll have to look into it. I don’t know much about it, but my brother used to inspect bee hives for the local government and has talked about it. I’ll have to ask him.
