A late afternoon thunderstorm builds over the Trinity Alps.
Billowing thunderclouds built up over the Trinity Alps last Wednesday. It was an ominous teaser of desperately needed rain. Our summer thunderstorms are the double-edged sword of rain and lightning. What will it be, soothing rain for parched earth or forest fires? These storms usually cause more grief than relief. I think we’re caught between a rock and a hard place. It’s not as if we get to choose what we get anyway.
Today the monsoonal moisture has returned. We’re already hearing thunder to the south. It could be an interesting day today.

Thunder shows the weather is going to rain

We’ve had a bit of rain already, but we often get dry lightning this time of year. When that happens there is lightning with no rain. We end up with lots of fires. Even when we have rain, we end up with “sleepers.” Sleepers are fires that start from lightning during the rain storm, but they smolder until things dry out. They often pop up days after the lightning bust.

Yeh Ive been looking at those same clouds from the other side of the mountains. Good Shot! They have been largely dry storm once they get to the coast range.

That’s what I’ve been afraid would happen. Today the build up is over the Northern Sierra and the Modoc Plateau. We’ll be looking over the down strike maps to see what’s going on.

It’s funny sometimes a whole large region seems to be yearning despareatly for rain. But you’re right, you can’t choose. Hope you get your rain with no lightening.

Me too, but this time of year it usually happen the other way around. We often don’t see the results for a couple of days.

We well know that dilemma. In 2003 it was lightning strikes in mountain forests that eventually built up and in adverse weather conditions became a firestorm that killed 4 people and destroyed some 500 houses in our city of Canberra, the national capital of Australia. I never realized, until I experienced it that the reason why fire footage was always looked like it was shot ‘at night’ was that that’s what it looks like inside a firestorm.
Hope any lightning strikes are washed out by rain.

I have seen some of the news coverage of the wildfires in Australia over the years. The western US is very similar in fire behavior and it is our time of for the fires. The lightning gave us a break, but we got a big fire anyway.

Yes there are a lot of similarities. It’s quite common for US firefighters to join in bushfire fighting here and vice versa.
